Mesa Natural Gas Solutions Receives Department Of Defense Freedom Award

CASPER, Wyo., Aug. 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Secretary of Defense James Mattis and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) have selected Mesa Natural Gas Solutions, a generator service company founded and led by veterans, as a 2017 recipient of the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.

Mesa, which specializes in natural gas or liquid propane powered mobile generators, was among 15 companies honored from 3,064 nominations the DoD received from Reserve Component troops across the country. The award was created to publicly recognize employers who provide exceptional support to their Guard and Reserve employees. It is the highest in a series of employer recognition awards given by the DoD.

Almost one-half of the U.S. military is comprised of the Guard and Reserve. The Department of Defense shares these citizen warriors with their civilian employers, many of whom provide significant support to their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.

Dallas-based BP Energy Partners, sponsored by industry icon T. Boone Pickens, acquired Mesa Natural Gas Solutions in 2014. The company provides clean, reliable power and other ancillary services primarily to the oil and gas industry by utilizing natural gas directly from the wellhead. In addition to Wyoming, the company's generators currently power oil and gas plays across North AmericaColorado, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Wyoming — and some international basins.

Mesa provides turnkey energy solutions to its customers through services contracts that are inclusive of equipment, maintenance, service, setup, and transportation. Natural gas generators are money savers and easier on the environment. Most diesel-powered generators require site fuel delivery three times a week; the natural gas alternatives do not require fuel deliveries, as they receive their fuel directly from the well head. Natural gas generators, which have much lower emissions than comparable diesel units, also reduce the amount of gas wasted as flare gas at well sites. So the process is more economic, cleaner, and requires less truck traffic to the site.

U.S. military veterans founded the company and comprise more than 60 percent of its employees. The company has more than 200 years of combined military service and more than 30 overseas deployments in its ranks.  It not only hires, employs, and promotes both veterans and active duty Service members, the company also supports them in whatever ways are needed.

"We are proud that the Department of Defense chose us for this honor," says Scott Gromer, president and chief executive officer of Mesa Natural Gas Solutions. "Providing opportunities for veterans is a key element of our mission. We are proud of the work we do with them and for them and, ultimately, using our generators to reduce America's dependence on OPEC fuels, a mission they have committed their lives to."

Gromer retired as a major from the Wyoming Army National Guard after a 23-year career that included two unit commands and three deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Employers who support their military employees' service make all the difference in the world.  That support can include paying an employee the difference between their military and civilian pay during a deployment, or even offering a full salary for the duration.  It can also be arranging for a U.S. senator to be on hand for a farewell ceremony.  Some companies show their commitment by targeting military for hiring, while others set up military affinity groups to learn how to better serve their military employees.  Still others pitch in and simply make life easier for the families of deployed service members.

Among the things Mesa does for its military employees: If an employee deploys, he or she receives full pay and benefits for the duration of the deployment. All Service Members currently serving in the National Guard or Reserves receive full pay while gone for military training/duties, and are guaranteed that his or her exact job will be available upon return. The company offers flexible scheduling to accommodate service and training obligations, even without notice. Full retirement, medical, dental, and vision benefits are provided during deployment. Employees accrue vacation and sick time during deployment. And the company's leadership team regularly attends — in full force — award and honor ceremonies for military members to show its support in its community.

"It is a privilege to work in a company that supports veterans and has excellent military leadership," says Chris Piasecki, project manager and retired Major in the Wyoming Army National Guard. "That is one of the things that keeps Mesa adaptable and relevant in our ever-changing conditions. Our employees know how to accomplish the mission at hand."

The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 under the auspices of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). ESGR is a Department of Defense office established in 1972 whose mission is to gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by advocating relevant initiatives, recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and resolving conflict between employers and service members.

The nomination process is open to all Guard and Reserve personnel or a family member acting on their behalf and applications are submitted online to ESGR. A national selection board comprised of senior Defense officials and business leaders select the award recipients.
