Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, Inc. Reacts to Proposed White House Budget Cuts
BALTIMORE, March 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is aware of the current news reports circulating regarding federal budget cuts to Meals on Wheels funding nationwide.
Executive Director Stephanie Archer-Smith thinks that these cuts are "infuriating" and "more than hurtful, because we stand by the work that we do and see first hand, the impact that it has." Reducing our budget means that people aren't being served and meals aren't being delivered. It costs roughly $4,000 per year to support a client with meals. For every $8 dollars we lose, it's one more person, one more day, that hasn't been served a meal.
We have been doing this work for more than 60 years. And our benefits to the most vulnerable go beyond food. Our volunteers are also trained to notice changes in our clients' demeanor as well as other red flags during their daily wellness check. Discovering problems early can lead to early intervention so that seniors can be connected to other service they might need.
We are following this story as it develops and will keep our clients and volunteers up to date as the story unfolds. At this point this is the beginning of the budget process in Washington, D.C. and many things can change. We are committed to do whatever we need to do to ensure impact to our programs is minimal.
As Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is a nonprofit organization, support from the community is needed now more than ever.
