Making It To Mother's Day: A Northridge Woman Fights For Life After Deadly Diagnosis

NORTHRIDGE, Calif., May 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- While the country hears about national cases of cancer diagnosis from the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) talcum powder cases, a Northridge woman hopes to make it to one last Mother's Day.

Cristina Assatourians, a former special education teacher and mother of three, is fighting for every last breath she takes. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using talcum powder her whole life.

"Cristina believed the talcum powder she used was safe – all the while, J&J ignored warnings that it could lead to ovarian cancer," said her attorney Joshua Haffner of Haffner Law.

In her videotaped deposition while lying in a hospital bed, Assatourians said she was angry a company could mislead people into believing their products are safe in order to make money.

"Now this is not only affecting me, it's affecting the whole family. I feel like I can't help them. I can't do anything for them. This is not life. This is not good."

According to Bloomberg Business Week, there are more than 3,000 lawsuits accusing the world's largest health-care company and Imery's Talc America, which provided talc to J&J, of ignoring studies linking its baby powder and Shower to Shower talc products to ovarian cancer and failing to warn customers about the risk.

As for Assatourians, she said she would have never used the product if she had any idea this could be the result. She said she's devastated. 

"I'm sick already. I'm going to die any moment. But I would like something to happen so no more people get sick," she said.
