Long Island Wine Council Announces New U.S. Public Relations Campaign
NEW YORK, Jan. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Long Island Wine Council, the organization promoting, protecting and strengthening Long Island Wine Country in New York, announces Teuwen Communications as its agency of record. The compelling program includes strategic media and trade relations as well as a social media campaign to further establish Long Island as a world-class wine region and showcase its passionate producers and balanced wines.
Established in 1989, Long Island Wine Council is a non-profit trade organization comprised of 40 member-wineries. Spearheaded by Executive Director Ali Tuthill and President Roman Roth of Wölffer Estate Vineyard, the Council aims to reveal the quality, character and distinct style of Long Island wines while maintaining community values and honoring the unique culture of this vital agricultural region.
The Region
Long Island Wine Country encompasses approximately 4,000 acres of vines spread over three American Viticultural Areas: The Hamptons AVA, North Fork AVA and Long Island AVA. Vines were first planted in Long Island in 1973 in the town of Cutchogue by pioneering winemakers Alex and Louisa Hargrave. Since then, the region has grown to 57 bonded producers—primarily small, family-owned businesses—producing nearly half a million cases a year.
The Environment
With a cool, maritime climate and sandy soils, Long Island winemakers are able to work with minimal intervention. The cooling breezes and mostly sunny conditions reduce the risk of diseases, while creating a long growing season that yields fully ripe, healthy grapes. The region has nearly 20 sustainable vineyards and wineries certified through the Long Island Sustainable Winegrowing organization, with many others practicing organic or biodynamic methods to protect, preserve and restore the environment.
The Climate and Wine Styles
Long Island is suitable for growing a wide array of varieties and making wine in all shades and styles: white, rosé, orange, red, sparkling, still, sweet and dry. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc as well as Cabernet Franc and Merlot are recognized as the flagship white and red grapes, respectively. Heralded for its diversity, the region also has the ideal growing conditions for other familiar and up-and-coming varieties alike, from Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer and Albariño to Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot and Refosco. With all varieties, Long Island wines strive to be balanced, sophisticated, delicious and characteristic of their terroir.
The Community
In addition to representing its member-wineries, the Long Island Wine Council advocates for partner-affiliates such as local restaurants, hotels, shops and transportation businesses to unite the community around the goal of creating a world-class destination for premium wine. The wine industry on the East End is responsible for generating some 2,000+ jobs and an estimated $150 million dollars in non-wine expenditures such as food, accommodations and retail. Long Island Wine Country is also an active and integral community member, supporting local East End organizations and charities, including HRHCare, the Peconic Land Trust and The Long Island Farm Bureau.
