ISPCON Spring 2005 Keynote Panel to Address Public-Private Partnerships: The Community Conundrum

    ISPCON Spring 2005

GOLDEN, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 28, 2005--New municipal broadband initiatives are born every minute in the United States while raising the volume of controversy in the communications sector. Private sector Internet operators are wrestling with how to react and who to partner with in this new era of publicly-funded Internet access as well. Depending on whom you ask, many existing operators view this as unfair competition funded by their own tax dollars. Others consider this the last "public network" they may ever gain access to. Given the shift in policy toward blocking competitors from accessing DSL and Cable networks, municipal broadband networks may be the final frontier for several ISPs. This, among other top issues will be the subject of heated debate at the upcoming ISPCON event in Baltimore, MD, May 24-26, 2005.
As many of the early municipal broadband roll-outs begin to shift out of planning phase and into deployment, the models for public-private partnerships are beginning to materialize and providers now have an opportunity to do what they do best: deliver unique value at the application and service layers.
The city of Philadelphia recently announced that they will provide wholesale access to their public network and others are already operating their networks with similar models, such as DynamicCity's UTOPIA service and Public Benefit Broadband's Central California Broadband initiative. Several operators, vendors and consultants view this as a golden opportunity to influence RFPs and build a dream network with public funds while incumbents continue to lobby against this new form of competition.
During the upcoming ISPCON event in Baltimore, MD, attendees will hear the realities of working and partnering with these new networks in order to determine how it impacts their business plans during a keynote panel discussion, "The Community Conundrum: Making Municipal Broadband a Win-Win," on Tuesday, May 24 at 10:00am in the Baltimore Convention Center.
Panelists for the keynote presentation include: Alan R. Shark, Executive Director of Public Technology Institute; James Baller, Founder, Baller Herbst Law Group; Timothy R. King, Executive Director, Public Benefit Broadband; and Ben Gould, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, DynamicCity.
Attendees will also have access to 50+ conference sessions and the largest exhibit hall of its kind focused on the business, policy and technology of Internet services during the three-day conference.
Exhibit space and conference passes are near sell-out status and capacity is limited for those who are interested in attending or exhibiting. Parties who would like to participate in the event may visit www.ispcon.com for additional exhibit and sponsorship details or call Nancy Moss at 408-850-9551.
Attendees for the exhibits and conference are able to register online at www.ispcon.com until May 23, 2005. Press inquiries may be submitted with credentials online or by sending email to press@thegoldengroup.net.
