Summary
Australia is ranked first globally with 52 Billion tonnes (Bnt) of Iron Ore reserve as of January 2017, accounting for 30.1% of the global total. Iron ore reserves are found abundantly in Western Australia and South Australia with minor deposits in Tasmania, Northern Territory, and New South Wales. In terms of iron ore production, Australia is also ranked first globally, accounting for 40.6% of global iron ore production.

Production is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.7% over the forecast period 2017-2021. With very limited scope for domestic consumption, the industry's growth is skewed toward demand from export markets. Australian iron ore exports were 810.9Mt in 2016.

China is the most important market with a share of 82.4% of Australian iron ore exports, followed by Japan and South Korea. The main companies operating in the Australian iron ore mining industry are Rio Tinto Plc, BHP Billiton Ltd, and Fortescue Metals Group Ltd.

Production from Rio Tinto's Warkworth, Hunter Valley, and Mount Thorley operations increased by 6.9%, 4.8%, and 1.4%, respectively, over the same period. However, BHP Billiton's iron ore production decreased by 2.2% due to operational rescheduling and abnormal weather conditions at New South Wales Energy Coal (NSWEC).
