InfoWorld Names SGI's Dr. Eng Lim Goh One of World's 25 Most Influenti
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- After searching for visionary technologists who "scan the horizon for promising new technologies and find singularly effective ways to implement them," InfoWorld Media Group has named Dr. Eng Lim Goh, chief technology officer of Silicon Graphics , as one of its 2005 CTO 25 Awards recipients.
InfoWorld singled out SGI's CTO after learning of the company's groundbreaking work on Project Ultraviolet, which has produced a series of innovations that resulted in history-making achievements in computing. These include fundamental technologies crucial to the creation of Columbia, NASA's 10,240-processor SGI(R) Altix(R) supercomputer, which was the most powerful computer in the world when NASA and SGI(R) completed installation in October 2004.
SGI's engineering efforts have also spawned entirely new approaches to solving the most complex problems in science, research and industry. Dr. Goh worked closely with SGI engineers to chart the company's unique concept of multi-paradigm computing, in which elements of various computational architectures are applied to the same data in a single, shared-memory environment.
"We're delighted to see Eng Lim acknowledged as one of the industry's most influential CTOs," said SGI CEO Bob Bishop. "This is a collective honor for every engineer at SGI, each of whom shares Dr. Goh's remarkable technology vision and tireless devotion to hard work. The team's extraordinary contributions have allowed SGI to help customers around the world find new ways to solve enormously complex problems faster and more accurately than ever before."
Each year, InfoWorld honors IT executives who have shown leadership both inside and outside of their companies. Nominations are reviewed by the InfoWorld CTO Advisory Council, which makes recommendations to InfoWorld editors for final selection.
The honor is particularly noteworthy because InfoWorld CTO awards typically go to CTOs at end-user organizations, rather than technology vendor companies like SGI. "Technology leadership requires technology vision and expertise," said Steve Fox, InfoWorld editor in chief. "This year's CTO 25 award winners continue to utilize cutting edge technologies to improve their businesses."
