Health Management Associates Names John Starcher Jr. Interim President And CEO

(RTTNews) - Health Management Associates Inc. (HMA) announced that it has appointed John Starcher Jr. as its Interim President and Chief Executive Officer, effective August 1, 2013. Starcher currently serves as Health Management's Eastern Group President.

Starcher, 43, joined Health Management as Eastern Group President in February 2012.

Prior to joining Health Management, Starcher worked at Catholic Health Partners or CHP for 13 years, where he most recently served as a Division CEO. Prior to that, Starcher served at CHP as the CEO of the Northeastern Pennsylvania region and as Senior Vice President of Human Resources. He began his health care career in academic medicine, serving six years at the Medical College of Ohio, now the University of Toledo Medical Center.

In a separate press lease, Health Management Associates announced its expected, unaudited results of operations for the second quarter ended June 30, 2013.

For the second quarter, the company expects to report net revenue from continuing operations of approximately $1.464 billion, and earnings per share from continuing operations attributable to the company of between $0.05 and $0.06. Excluding approximately $0.05 of interest rate swap expense, which was also excluded for 2013 guidance, the company expects earnings per share to be between $0.10 and $0.11.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expect the company to report earnings of $0.21 per share and revenues of $1.73 billion for the second-quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.

The company is also announcing that on June 10, June 26, and July 11, 2013, Health Management received additional subpoenas from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General or "OIG". These subpoenas supplement subpoenas originally received in 2011 regarding certain emergency room operations. In addition, on June 12, 2013, Health Management received an additional subpoena from the OIG which supplements a 2011 subpoena regarding physician relationships. Health Management said it continues to cooperate in response to the government inquiries.
