Groundbreaking Radio Program 'In Your Right Mind' to Explore Personality Traits and Addiction in Upcoming Show

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., Nov. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- "In Your Right Mind," a new weekly behavioral health radio program that features in-depth roundtable discussions of today's behavioral health headlines, is set to air its second episode on Sunday, November 20 on Talk Radio 790 AM KABC in Los Angeles. The program, "4 Personality Traits = Addiction," will air at a special time: 2 to 3 p.m. PST. The program is co-hosted by Program Producer Kristina Kuestner and Dr. Tonmoy Sharma, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sovereign Health, who provides in-depth medical and clinical expertise. The goal of "In Your Right Mind," produced in conjunction with Sovereign Health, is to raise public awareness and to get people talking about pertinent issues surrounding today's mental health and substance abuse epidemics.

Sunday's program will explore a controversial new theory that focuses on four different traits in adolescents that may create pathways for addiction. The Substance Use Risk Profile measures traits linked to substance use profiles. The four traits include sensation-seeking, impulsiveness, anxiety sensitivity and hopelessness.

Some believe that by focusing on these certain personality traits, anti-drug programs can look at the individual, rather than generalizing the addiction problem. "If you think about it, a person who is really anxious and withdrawn is not going to respond the same way as the person who is really outgoing and seeking all kinds of things, like roller coasters. Those are opposite traits. There are people who use drugs because they feel hopeless and as though nothing will be good for them and they find that drugs help that. Then, there are other people who use drugs because they just want to hype things up because they're feeling nothing rather than feeling too much," explains writer/recovering addict, Maia Szalavitz.

"In Your Right Mind" not only looks closely into these four traits, but also provides insight to those who express concern on highlighting these specific traits. "You may have someone who is a risk taker, or someone who is compulsive, or an anxious young person. But, if they are resilient, then the likelihood of them being exposed to drugs, and later on becoming an addict, is actually pretty low," says Dr. Blair Mor, an addiction psychologist who deals with teens and addiction.

Sunday's panelists include addiction counselor, Dawn Maxwell; adolescence researcher, Dr. Natalie Castellanos-Ryan; Barbara Theodosiou, the founder of the international group The Addict's Mom (TAM); and Dr. Mor and Ms. Szalavitz.

The inaugural show, which aired on Sunday, Nov. 13, focused on the lingering stigma of mental illness and how it affects the ability of millions of Americans to find and receive appropriate treatment.

"In Your Right Mind" has an accompanying website, www.InYourRightMind.com. The website features "Talk to Your Right Mind," a message board listeners can use to post comments about the program, ask questions or recommend topics for future broadcasts.

In subsequent weeks, "In Your Right Mind" will be broadcast in its usual time slot: 5 to 6 p.m. PST and will cover the following topics:

Sunday, Nov. 27: "Distorted Disorders" explores the cost of pursuing perfection. From breaking down disordered eating and eating disorders to body dysmorphia, experts from the eating disorder field share insight on the physical and psychological impacts of these distorted disorders.

Sunday, Dec. 4: "NIMBY" (Not In My Backyard) explores the explosive community protest movement driven by residents who oppose having treatment facilities and sober living residences in their city.

Sunday, Dec. 11: "Fabricating the Facts" asks the question, "What makes someone continuously exaggerate the truth?" The panel will discuss why and how the brain reacts to "fibs" and how that allows some to continuously lie.
