GigaBeam Sells Two Additional WiFiber(TM) Links for San Francisco Public Utilities Commission
Hans Loffeld, IT Director of the SF PUC, said, "We have been verypleased with the operation of our WiFiber links and the supportprovided by GigaBeam. These additional GigaBeam links will augment theexisting GigaBeam WiFiber links. The primary purpose of the WiFiberlinks is to provide backhaul for a WiMax or meshed WiFi network whichenables streaming video surveillance of the PUC's Water Works pumpingstations and valves. This further deployment will allow us to takeadvantage of the throughput capacity and cost effective bandwidth ofthe WiFiber links for additional applications, including GIS mapping,VoIP and general backhaul of data. Our experience with the firstGigaBeam links has encouraged us to add the new links and to consideradditional purchases based upon the WiFiber bandwidth and reliabilityto support a wide range of critical City and PUC functions. Theeconomics of WiFiber have proven superior to terrestrial fiber andother wireless alternatives."
Lou Slaughter, GigaBeam's Chairman and CEO, added, "We welcome thedecision by the City of San Francisco PUC to continue the roll out ourWiFiber product solutions. Their experience with our product is proofthat other cities can also implement cost-effective applications byinstalling and utilizing our products' Gigabit-per-second throughputand superior cost effectiveness. We look forward to working with theCity and the PUC on their continued network rollout."
GigaBeam WiFiber products operate in the 71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHzradio spectrum bands. This portion of the radio frequency spectrum hasbeen authorized by the Federal Communications Commission for wirelesspoint-to-point commercial use. Use of these frequency bands forcommercial use was pioneered by GigaBeam's founders.
GigaBeam's technology, utilizing these large blocks of authorizedcontiguous spectrum, enables multi-Gigabit-per-second communicationsthrough use of Gigabit Ethernet and other standard protocols. Thecurrent speed achieved by GigaBeam's WiFiber product lines is oneGigabit-per-second - equivalent to 647 T1 lines or 1,000 DSLconnections. GigaBeam also plans deployment of future products capableof 10 Gigabits-per-second utilizing either the 10 Gigabit Ethernet orOC-192 protocol standards.
GigaBeam's WiFiber technology is similar to terrestrial fiber interms of speed and reliability for deployment in Metropolitan AreaNetworks (MANS). However, WiFiber has a substantial advantage overterrestrial fiber because WiFiber can be deployed in a day and costsless to deploy than terrestrial fiber. Terrestrial fiber can takemonths to deploy and also require significant regulatory andenvironmental approvals prior to installation.
