The total market comprises two segments: syringes and needles. The syringe segment includes three sub-segments: conventional syringes, safety syringes and insulin syringes. The conventional syringe sub-segment includes two-part and three-part conventional syringes. The insulin syringe sub-segment includes insulin syringes sold with a needle and insulin syringes sold without a needle. The needle sub-segment includes three sub-segments: conventional needles, safety needles and blunt type needles. The majority of syringes and needles in Europe are sold separately and combined when used, but there are some unique markets such as Italy where high sales of syringes and needles already attached make the stand-alone market small by comparison.

Abstract
Syringes and needles were the first devices used for vascular access, and they are still widely used in Europe. Syringes are used for a variety of applications, including percutaneous injections, injection into catheters, preparation and transport of drugs, blood draws and non-medical applications. Needles connect to syringes and are used for gaining vascular access. They can be sold in combination with syringes or separately. With the aid of needleless connectors such as Luer locks, syringes can be used without needles.
