CurePSP Support Group Initiative Goes Global This Giving Tuesday

NEW YORK, Nov. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- CurePSP, the leading nonprofit advocacy organization for prime of life neurodegenerative diseases, today announced the launch of a global initiative tied to Giving Tuesday, #PiesforPSP, to support individuals and families who have been affected by progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and several related diseases.

On Giving Tuesday, November 28, #PiesforPSP will encourage people who have just been with family for Thanksgiving to think of those who have lost, or are losing, a loved one to PSP, and give the gift of hope for a future free of PSP and related diseases.

The genesis for the campaign was Little Rock, Arkansas local Randi Haley whose father was diagnosed with PSP. Wanting to do something to help others affected by this rare, incurable and progressive disease, Randi created a local support group, which meets monthly in the local Methodist church, and which she facilitates. She also conceived the #PiesforPSP campaign, which, through grassroots outreach, has expanded to several countries.

"These are afflictions that often strike in middle age, when people may have careers, family responsibilities, and active lives," said David Kemp, President, CurePSP. "The disease is serious, often requiring round-the-clock care as symptoms worsen, with people succumbing to the disease in an average of seven years." Mr. Kemp continued, "CurePSP supports patients and their families, provides education and awareness, and funds research, and we are very fortunate to work with super volunteers such as Randi Haley to help spread hope. Seeing her success in sparking hope and a sense of community with #PiesforPSP, we wanted to extend her great work and offer individuals another way to partake in Giving Tuesday and give back in a way that's meaningful to them."

This November, #PiesforPSP encourages individuals to donate $10 to CurePSP at www.psp.org/piesforpsp, get pied in the face, challenge three friends to do the same, video the action, and share on social media with the hashtag #PiesforPSP and hashtag #GivingTuesday. Pies can be as simple as whipped cream or shaving cream on a paper plate. Videos can be shared with CurePSP on Facebook: @curepsp.foundation, and Twitter: @curepsp, with the hashtag #PiesforPSP.

About Giving Tuesday
After Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is the day of giving back to the causes you care about. Giving Tuesday harnesses social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities by providing a platform for them to address local challenges. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners— nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses and corporations, as well as families and individuals—to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness. Using the hashtag #givingtuesday, this movement has raised $177 million since its inauguration in 2012.
