Children's Charity CHERUBS Makes Trump's Short List for Salary Donation
WAKE FOREST, N.C., March 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- According to Philanthropy.com, Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) research, awareness, and support charity, CHERUBS, was nominated by suggestions to the White House Press Corps along with 9 other NPOs. The list of 10 charities was presented to President Donald Trump on Tuesday, March 28th.
According to CHERUBS' president, Dawn Ireland, CDH has the least amount of funding per patient of any deadly birth defect. "Currently we are unable to fund vital research to discover the cause of CDH and discover best practices for its treatment. The cost of the life-saving procedures for a single patient is equivalent to the total amount of research money allotted to CDH from the NIH."
Not only is research funding lacking, there is also an extreme deficit of financial support for families who often go bankrupt due to extended time in hospitals and medical bills. "Without support funding," stated Ireland, "we cannot help families with travel and food expenses and funeral costs, all on top of their regular bills."
Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia is a birth defect that yearly strikes 2,500 babies worldwide and 1,600 babies in the United States. Approximately 800 of the 1,600 babies will die each year. During gestation, the diaphragm fails to fully form often allowing abdominal organs to reach the chest cavity and restrict lung growth. The cause is still unknown.
Ireland founded CHERUBS in 1995 to help families with children born with CDH. The charity helps over 6,100 CDH families in all 50 states and 62 countries. Their mission is to support the CDH families, facilitate research, and raise awareness for this deadly birth defect.
CHERUBS operates with a $200,000 budget each year. "Not only would President Trump's donation triple our budget, but it would also help us raise awareness for the CDH cause and let our families know that they have an ally in their President."
