CAPG Applauds House Members Who Urge HHS Action on Medicare Advantage Alternative Payment Models
WASHINGTON, July 12, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Monday, Representatives Tom Reed (R-NY), Tony Cardenas (D-CA), Larry Bucshon (R-IN), and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) co-led a bipartisan Congressional letter signed by a total of 24 members of Congress urging recognition of certain Medicare Advantage (MA) contracts for purposes of qualifying as an advanced alternative payment model (APM).
Under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), physicians are encouraged to join advanced APMs. However, to date, qualifying advanced APMs have included only a handful of models in traditional Medicare.
The letter, addressed to Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Seema Verma, encourages the Administration to add Medicare Advantage risk contracts between health plans and physician groups to the list of qualifying APMs.
"Recognizing the value of alternative payment model contracting in Medicare Advantage is absolutely essential to the success of the value movement," said Don Crane, CAPG President and CEO. "We simply cannot succeed in transforming the delivery system if we continue to ignore Medicare Advantage, the option that provides high value care to a third of the senior population. We thank these members of Congress for their support for seniors and physicians participating in MA today and in the future."
This letter adds bipartisan Congressional support to a growing chorus of stakeholders who have called on the government to count Medicare Advantage relationships under MACRA.
