Annual tribute to Veterans and Canadian Armed Forces personnel at CFL Western Semi-final playoff game

Veterans Remembrance Tribute takes place in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, Nov. 12, 2017 /CNW/ - To be Canadian means to stand on guard for peace, freedom and democracy. This has been bravely demonstrated countless times by Canadian women and men in uniform who have served and sacrificed—without reservation—in defence of these shared values over the past 150 years. We honour and remember each of these brave Canadians.

Today, on behalf of Seamus O'Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, Terry Duguid, Parliamentary Secretary for Status of Women and MP for Winnipeg South, joined Canadian Football League (CFL) players and officials, Veterans, and thousands of football fans at the Veterans Remembrance Tribute at the CFL Western Division semi-final playoff game in Winnipeg between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Edmonton Eskimos.

Since 2008, each year on the second Sunday in November, the Canadian Football League launches the semi-final playoff games with a special tribute to Veterans. This year, Terry Duguid participated in the official coin toss during the pre-game tribute show.

Quotes

"I thank the Canadian Football League for bringing Canadians together to honour our Veterans and men and women in uniform at this moving tribute. Sport has long been a part of our military history; the camaraderie experienced on and off the field serves to strengthen morale and friendship among the troops, and to sustain them on and off the battlefield."
The Honourable Seamus O'Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence

"We are proud to be a partner with the Canadian Football League for what has become an important, annual tradition for thousands of Canadians. The Veterans Remembrance Tribute is one of the highlights of ongoing commemorative efforts to invite Canadians to honour and remember Veterans and the brave men and women in uniform.
Terry Duguid, Parliamentary Secretary for Status of Women and MP for Winnipeg South

"Every November, we Canadians remember the brave and selfless men and women who have served in our military. And every November, we travel together on the road to the Grey Cup. These two rituals are related because it is our veterans who have made it possible for us to gather, in freedom and friendship, to celebrate things that are uniquely Canadian. It is with the deepest respect that we join Canadians in paying tribute to them."
Randy Ambrosie, Commissioner, Canadian Football League
