Acme Packet Interconnects Calltrade around the Globe

Acme Packet® (NASDAQ: APKT), the leader in session border control solutions, today announced that Switzerland-based competitive operator Calltrade Carrier Services AG has deployed Acme Packet’s Net-Net® 4500 session border controller (SBC) for its wholesale VoIP service. Calltrade utilizes the Net-Net SBC at interconnect borders to monitor and enforce service levels, and also to expand its service footprint by using Acme Packet’s Net-Net OS signaling mediation and protocol interworking functions to deliver seamless interoperability with other service providers throughout the world.

Calltrade is a VoIP services wholesaler that supports a worldwide network of service providers and phone card providers, routing traffic from its various points of presence (POPs) to destinations throughout the world. With a goal of combining high service quality levels with competitive pricing, Calltrade’s network operations center constantly monitors network and service status so that it can proactively address quality and/or network issues. Calltrade estimates that its International Interconnect service handles 9 billion call minutes per year.

To consistently deliver high subscriber quality-of-experience, Calltrade utilizes Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBC transport controls to map signaling and media traffic to distinct VLANs within its POPs. Calltrade also applies rate limiting policies at the Net-Net SBC to protect its core infrastructure against signaling overloads during periodic spikes or extremely busy traffic periods. In addition, Calltrade uses Acme Packet’s hardware-assisted QoS measurement capability and accounting functionality to ensure that service is maintained at consistently high levels for all of its customers.

To extend its service to a diverse global customer base, Calltrade uses the Net-Net SBC to interwork H.323 and SIP and to resolve SIP interoperability issues between its customers. These capabilities allow Calltrade to increase service revenues by enabling seamless interoperability with other services as well as the wide variety of endpoints.

Calltrade also selected Acme Packet because of Acme Packet’s professional services organization, which completed the entire project within five weeks, including training Calltrade’s technical staff. Calltrade also leveraged Acme Packet’s Net-ASSURE services for assistance with the initial SBC configurations.

"Acme Packet’s overall responsiveness gave them a clear advantage once we decided to move forward with our project,” said Daniel Groth, CEO of Calltrade. "We were impressed with how quickly Acme Packet provided a solution which seamlessly fit our network design requirements and exceeded our expectations.”

"Calltrade’s selection of the Net-Net SBC reflects the high priority today’s service providers place on product capabilities and vendor responsiveness,” said Seamus Hourihan, executive vice president of marketing and product management for Acme Packet. "At the same time, Calltrade’s focus on interoperability and service assurance demonstrates their commitment to achieving an international presence as a wholesale provider of first-class VoIP services.”
