Cypress Delivers Low-Cost Development Kits for PSoC Mixed-Signal Array
Business Editors/High-Tech Writers
LYNNWOOD, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 2005--
Cypress MicroSystems Inc., a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:CY), today introduced three inexpensive development kits for its Programmable System-on-Chip(TM) (PSoC(TM)) mixed-signal array devices. The low-cost development tools enable designers of embedded control systems to design, emulate, debug and prototype PSoC devices without designing a printed circuit board.
The new kits include the CY3215-DK, a powerful in-system emulator; the CY3210-PSoCEval1, an evaluation board with mini-programmer; and Flex-Pod Kits, which integrate a cable, pod, mask and foot into one component. They expedite and simplify design with Cypress's PSoC mixed-signal arrays, single-chip devices that integrate a microcontroller and the analog and digital components that typically surround it. A single PSoC device can integrate as many as 100 peripheral functions with the microcontroller, saving customers design time, board space, power consumption, and system costs.
"These kits make designing with PSoC devices simpler, faster and less expensive," said Greg Verge, Senior Applications Engineer, Cypress MicroSystems. "We're confident that when engineers begin to work with these products, they'll realize numerous benefits, including shorter design cycles, reduced part counts and lower cost."
CY3215-DK Development Kit
The new CY3215-DK professional-class development kit includes a tiny footprint, high-speed in-circuit USB 2.0-based emulator with a large trace buffer, which seamlessly integrates with PSoC Designer and the user's development board. The kit also contains all materials for the first four "Tele-training" classes offered on-line by Cypress. The easy-to-use tools support all the advanced PSoC packages and provide all the features found in tools costing $2,500 or more. Everything a designer needs to get started with PSoC is included in the development kit:
-- | ICE-Cube In-Circuit Emulator |
-- | ICE Flex-Pod for CY8C29xxx Family |
-- | iMAGEcraft C-Compiler (Registration Required) |
-- | Backward compatibility Cat-5 Adapter |
-- | ISSP Cable |
-- | Mini-Eval Programming Board in One |
-- | USB 2.0 Cable and Blue Cat-5 Cable |
-- | 110 - 240V Power Supply, Euro-Plug Adapter |
-- | 2 CY8C29466-24PXI 28-PDIP Chip Samples |
CY3210-PsoCEval1 Evaluation Kit
The CY3210-PSoCEval1 evaluation kit features an evaluation board and mini-programming unit (MiniProg) that supports all PSoC CY8C2x family members, significantly reducing a designer's learning curve and product development cycle. Analog and digital board resources include a 28-pin PSoC socket; an In-System Serial Programming(TM) (ISSP(TM)) connector; a 5-volt regulator powered from a wall transformer or 9-volt battery; an RS-232 serial port with DB-9 for general use; an LCD display; a solderless breadboard; LEDs for diagnostic tests; and a potentiometer.
The MiniProg programming unit is also included with the kit and will program PSoC devices directly on the evaluation board or on other boards via a 5-pin header. This programming unit is small and compact, and connects to a PC via a provided USB 2.0 Cable.
CY3210-MiniProg1
The mini-programmer can be purchased separately with a mini-evaluation PCB board. The mini-evaluation board includes LEDs, a push-button switch and a potentiometer, but no LCD module or breadboard prototyping space.
The Flex-Pod Kits
The new CY3215-DK supports new state-of-the-art Flex-Pod technology. Flex-Pods improve on what used to be a multi-component approach to emulation. The Flex-Pod integrates the cable, pod, mask, and foot into one component. This integration enhances signal integrity and improves both electrical and mechanical reliability. The small size facilitates emulation on densely packed PCBs.
Pricing and Availability
All of the kits are available today through the "On-Line Store" at www.cypress.com and through Cypress's worldwide network of authorized distributors:
Kit Purpose Price ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CY3215-DK Ice Cube Complete emulation and development Development Kit capability $599.00 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CY3210-PsoCEval1 Extensive evaluations and prototyping Evaluation Kit $65.00 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CY3210-MiniProg1 Lowest cost programmer, evaluation and ISSP Programmer demonstration $35.00 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Flex-Pod Kits State-of-the-art emulation pod used with the CY3215-DK $75.00 ----------------------------------------------------------------------

About the PSoC Family
PSoC devices are configurable mixed-signal arrays that integrate a fast 8-bit microcontroller with many peripheral functions typically found in an embedded design. PSoC devices provide the advantages of an ASIC without the typical ASIC NRE or turn-around time. A single PSoC device can integrate as many as 100 peripheral functions along with the microcontroller, saving customers design time, board space, power consumption and from 5 cents to as much as $10 in system costs. Easy-to-use development tools enable designers to select configurable library elements to provide analog functions such as amplifiers, ADCs, DACs, filters and comparators and digital functions such as timers, counters, PWMs, SPI and UARTs. PSoC analog features include rail-to-rail inputs, programmable gain amplifiers and up to 14-bit ADCs with exceptionally low noise, input leakage and voltage offset. PSoC devices include up to 32KB of Flash memory, 2KB of SRAM, an 8x8 multiplier with 32-bit accumulator, power and sleep monitoring circuits, and hardware I2C communications.
All PSoC devices are dynamically reconfigurable, enabling designers to create new system functions on the fly. Designers can achieve more than 120 percent utilization of the die, in many cases, by reconfiguring the same silicon for different functions at different times. In the automotive PSoC LIN bus reference design, the same digital blocks are reconfigured four times to support the different LIN communication modes; in doing so, these blocks consume less than 10 percent of PSoC hardware resources and less than 10 percent of the PSoC MCU cycles.
Software and Support
PSoC Designer, the software development environment for PSoC, is a full-featured, GUI-based design tool suite that enables the user to configure design-in silicon with simple point-and-click options. With PSoC Designer, users can code the MCU in either C or assembly language; and debug the design using sophisticated features such as event triggers and multiple break points, while single-stepping through code in C or assembly or a mix of the two. PSoC Designer is free and can be located and downloaded at www.cypress.com.
