Ameriprise Financial and its Employees and Advisors Pledge More Than $4.4 Million to Nonprofit Organizations

Ameriprise Financial, Inc. (NYSE: AMP), along with its employees and financial advisors, has pledged more than $4.4 million to nonprofit organizations through the company’s 2009 annual giving campaign. The pledge includes employee and advisor contributions, a dollar-for-dollar match by Ameriprise Financial and money donated during special campaign events.

Ameriprise Financial conducts an "open” campaign, allowing its employees and financial advisors to designate their contributions to any eligible nonprofit organization or one of the company’s featured partners: Community Health Charities, Earth Share, Global Impact, United Way and Feeding America. To further its domestic hunger relief efforts, the company also matched pledges made by its franchise advisors with a donation of approximately one million meals to Feeding America.

"In a year when many people have been negatively impacted by the economy, it is inspiring to see our employees’ and advisors’ continued commitment to charitable giving,” said Brian Pietsch, head of community relations at Ameriprise Financial. "Through our combined efforts, we are able to make an even greater impact on more than 5,000 nonprofit organizations across the country.”

Ameriprise Financial also awarded 63 grants to nonprofit organizations during its third funding cycle of 2009. More than $700,000 was awarded under the company’s three funding platforms: Meeting Basic Needs, Supporting Community Vitality and Volunteer Driven Causes.

Highlights from the recent grant cycle include:

  • Funding HIRED’s workplace readiness and employment programs, which help low-income and disadvantaged people in the Twin Cities achieve self sufficiency. A grant from Ameriprise Financial will help HIRED continue to offer its innovative programs at no cost to participants, at a time when demand for services is dramatically increasing. Randy Doroff, an Ameriprise financial advisor, serves on the organization’s Board of Directors.
  • Helping the National Philharmonic of Montgomery County, Md., make classical music accessible. A grant from Ameriprise Financial will help fund a program that allows children to attend any performance of the National Philharmonic free of charge. In addition, the organization will present educational concerts for every second and fifth grade student in the county - approximately 20,000 children - during its upcoming season. Mark Williams, an Ameriprise financial advisor, serves on National Philharmonic's Board of Directors.
  • Supporting The Empty Stocking Fund’s Literacy Project. Funding from Ameriprise Financial will help The Empty Stocking Fund provide at least one book or other educational item in each gift package the organization distributes to low-income families this holiday season. Gary Jones, an Ameriprise financial advisor in Georgia, serves on The Empty Stocking Fund’s Board of Directors.

Starting on November 27, the company also will continue a 12-year tradition of sponsoring the Ameriprise Financial Food and Cash Drive at the Holidazzle Parade in Minneapolis. All contributions collected along the parade route benefit Emergency Foodshelf Network and will be matched by Ameriprise Financial (up to $25,000).

Ameriprise Financial is currently accepting grant applications for 2010 funding. The next application deadline is February 1, 2009.
